begginers courses

beginner course one    sharpening and tuning

Before any precision making can commence, makers need to be able to create and maintain sharp cutting edges to all edge tools and ensure plane soles and chisel backs are flat and square. All materials are provided for this two day course, just bring along your hand planes and chisels, regardless of condition. Ideally students should bring a 5 1/2 Jack plane, a block plane and a set of chisels. If you are thinking of purchasing tools, new or second hand, before the course and would like some advice then please call me.

beginner course two    pencil case with  piston fit tray

This course gently introduces the student to fine cabinet making tolerances and highlights the importance of accurate measuring and marking. The challenge is to make a simple box / pencil case with an internal tray that is ‘true’ so that it fits snugly inside the box regardless of which way around it is. With the box placed on its end the tray should glide down on the cushion of escaping air.

All materials are provided for this 3 day course, just bring along your basic tool kit. Hand planes and chisels should be sharp, true and ready to go as no time is set aside for initial sharpening.

Please see the video of the pencil case in the Videos tab.

beginner course three    stacking box project

A deceptively simple looking cube ideal for storing chisels and other commonly used tools. The completed cube consists of three identical stacked cases, each housing a drawer with an internal tray. The challenge is to make any tray, fit in any drawer and any case, all internal trays should be square and have the slightest air gap around them enabling the trays to gently lower on a cushion of escaping air. This project incorporates simple jointing methods, but excels at demonstrating the importance of accurate measuring and marking.

All materials are provided on the course to make one case, one drawer and one tray, just bring along your basic tool kit. Tools must be sharp, true and ready to go, as no time is allowed for initial sharpening and tuning.

Please see the video of the stacking box project in the Videos tab.
